Ansley Hall Cricket Club

THE ANNUAL DINNER

The annual dinner of the Ansley Hall Cricket Club took place at Ansley Hall on Saturday evening last, when about forty members and friends sat down to an excellent repast. Councilor John Randle presided in the unavoidable absence of the esteemed president, Mr. W. G. Phillips, and amongst those present were Messrs. J. Barber, P. Greenough, R. Earle, H. Bowler, I. Jones, H. Wright, A. Lock, A. Farndon, L. Crow, Captain T. Wright, and others.

The usual loyal toast of “The King” having been given, the Secretary presented the annual report, which showed a balance in hand of 9s. 3d. The surplus was not quite so large as last year owing to the purchase of a mower.

The prizes for bowling and batting last season were then presented by the chairman. I. Jones had won both the batting and bowling prizes in the first team, but he only claimed the batting prize, valued £1 1s., and the bowling prize (10s. 6d.) was awarded to S. Bowler. The second team prizes (l0s. 6d. each) were won by J. Hurley and J. Wilson, for batting and bowling respectively. The winners' averages were as follows:-

Bowling:           I. Jones           11.15 runs

       “                 J. Hurley         7.57     “

Bowling:           I   Jones          5.10 runs per wkt.

       “                 P. sic  Bowler 5.57                 “

       “                 J. Wilson         4.23                 “

The Chairman then proposed the health of the President, who, he said, had lived amongst them upwards of twenty five years. They could not find a better president in this or any other county, and they ought to be proud of him. He had done much for his workpeople in laying out such a splendid cricket ground, and also in providing a bowling green which had just been finished, and which he (Mr Randle) had heard had cost nearly £100. The club should appreciate their president's kindness by sticking together. The Chairman, in conclusion, remarked that he hoped to see Mr. J. H. Phillips following in his father’s footsteps.

The toast was drunk with musical honours, and the health of Mrs Phillips and family was also enthusiastically received.

Mr. J. Barber submitted the toast of the "Vice-Presidents," and in doing so remarked that it was due to their help that the club could show a balance on the right side.

Mr. R. Earle, who responded, advised the players to pull together and try to obtain one or two cups this season in order to decorate the table at the next annual dinner.

Mr. Earle also proposed the toast of “The Chairman," and remarked that they were all pleased to see Mr. Randle, because he was an old cricketer.

The Chairman, on rising to respond, was received with musical honours. He said he hoped the Club would be even more successful in the future than it had been in the past.

The health of the pianist, Mr. P. Greenough was also proposed, and suitably responded to.

During the evening songs were contributed by Messrs. Deacon, Earle, Farndon, Barber, Jurtice, and Captain Knight. An enjoyable evening concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Nuneaton Observer 12-5-1905

Are Capts Wright and Knight the same person? Should Jurtice be Justice?

Despite calls for “sticking together”, on this very day J Phillips and Rev C Heaton played for Ansley Village in a match against Chapel End for whom J Phillips was playing. Later in the season John Phillips was playing for Chapel End.  J H Phillips did not play for Ansley Hall this year in any match I have found but appeared in at least one match for Nuneaton.
