Ansley Victoria 1899

Sat 15th April 1899

Bedworth Town v Ansley Victoria.

At Bedworth, on Saturday. The Ansley captain won the toss, and decided to bat first, when they ran up a creditable score of 50. P Greenough, Jos. Phillips, and H. King were prominent with the bat, and P. Greenough and Jas. Phillips with the ball, the latter’s analysis being: 6 overs 1 maiden 6 runs 3 wickets, and the former’s figures being: 7 overs 1 maiden 10 runs 3 wickets. Downing, Gibson, Bonsor and T. Wyatt were deserving of praise. Score-

Victorious Victoria

Ansley Victorias came to Coton “to conquer or to die.” They did the former, and, in point of merit, their performance ranks with Chapel End’s conquest of Nuneaton Mutuals. (same day) Both teams were strong. Coton went to pieces before the deliveries of the Ansley trundlers, and were all out for 25. Only W. Hall, J. Lee, and W Clews did any scoring, the other eight batsmen retiring with nothing to their credit. The “lion” of the afternoon, was, undoubtedly, P. Greenough, who showed that he can play cricket quite as successfully as he can entertain an audience at the Ansley Hall Social Club. He made 24 runs, and in two overs with the ball captured two wickets for a single run. I. Jones contributed a nice not-out innings of 18, and Captain J. H. Phillips is deserving of all praise for his bowling. The analysis comes out thus: -

J. H. Phillips, 11 overs, 7 maidens, 5 runs,   4 wickets

T Armstrong, 13 overs, 7 maidens, 10 runs, 2 wickets

P Greenough, 2 overs, 1 maiden,   1 run,    2 wickets

The worthy Vicar of Ansley (Rev. C. Heaton) was batting in promising form when he succumbed to the Coton captain. Score:-

Ansley Victoria.

Nuneaton Mutuals v Ansley Victoria

At Nuneaton on Saturday. The home team were assisted by W. Summerfield (formerly a prominent member of the town clubs of Nuneaton and Atherstone). Ansley made 39, which included 13 by T. Armstrong; and the only extra recorded by them was a leg-bye. Nuneaton made a poor start, A. Andrews being bowled before a run was scored. T Phillips played a nice not-out innings of 19, and T. Wright was next in order with 10. Nuneaton won by 9 runs. A Brownson had five wickets for 12 runs, and W Summerfield four for 7. Ansley did not concede one extra.

Sat 27th May 1899

Ansley Victoria v Chilvers Coton

On the ground of the first named. Ansley batted first, the Rev. Charles Heaton and J Armstrong opening well, against the bowling of W. Hall and W. Holmes. Fifteen runs were scored for the first wicket; four down for 27, and the last five wickets added 16 runs. Coton appear to have made a mistake, in W. Lambourne not bowling at the commencement; for, whereas the first pair of trundlers, W. Hall and W. Holmes, had only one wicket between them for 31 runs, W Lambourne and J Bucknall captured 9 for 17. The Coton bowlers performed as follows: - W. Lambourne: 14 overs, 6 maidens, 12 runs, 7 wickets: J. Bucknall: 4 overs, 2 maidens, 5 runs, 2 wickets: W. Hall: 13 overs, 3 maidens, 16 runs, 1 wicket: W. Holmes: 4 overs, 1 maiden, 15 runs, 0 wicket. Coton made a poor start the first wicket falling at 6, and the 5th at 25. Then, with Sheffield and his captain (W. Lambourne) together, the match seemed to be a sure thing for the Nuneaton suburban men; for, with half their wickets in hand, they required only seven runs in order to achieve a victory. Both the batsmen who had made the stand of the day were bowled by Jones, and after this J. H. Phillips soon put an end to the chapter, bowling the last three men, who added but a couple of runs, one of which was a bye. Thus, did Victoria pull out of the fire a game that, at one time, appeared a certain thing for Coton. W. Lambourne came out as the best performer on the Coton side; and J. H. Phillips, I. Jones and T. Armstrong achieved distinction as Ansley players. Score: -

Ansley Victoria v Warton.

(Liggins Cup First Round)

This, too, was a cup-tie, played at Warton, on Saturday. Ansley were well represented. Warton won the toss, and put Ansley in – evidently with the intention of seeing what their opponents could do, and to be in a position to know what they had to face. Ansley played grandly, and set the Wartonians too difficult a task in the form of a score of 102 (for 8 wickets). Every man who went to the wickets, on the Ansley side, scored. Against the total of 102, Warton made a very feeble effort, and but for the magnanimity of the Ansley players the top scorer of the Warton side would have been out for “handling ball.” Phillips and Armstrong bowled well, the eight wickets being divided  - Phillips 4 for 8; Armstrong, 4 for 7. On the Warton side, no less than nine bowlers were tried. Particulars: -

Ansley Victoria v Coventry Union Street

This match was a second round match in the competition for the “Liggins” cup, and was played on the Ansley Hall Ground, on Saturday. Coventry won the toss, and were the first to defend. Against the bowling of J. H. Phillips and T. Armstrong the visitors could do but little, and they scored less than 20 from the bat. The Ansley bowlers performed thus: T. Armstrong – 9 overs, 5 maidens, 8 runs, 5 wickets: J. H. Phillips – 8 overs, 3 maidens, 9 runs, 4 wickets. Ansley were not long in knocking off the 24 runs necessary for a victory. Greenough, King, Phillips and Hart displayed good form with the bat. The following particulars will show how Ansley Victorias fought their way into the semi-final of the competition: -

Atherstone Town v Ansley Victoria

This match was played at Ansley Hall, on Saturday. It had been looked forward to with some interest, and it was a kind of “Derby Day,” in which Atherstone figured rather prominently. The Ansley captain won the toss, and decided to bat on an excellent wicket. The Rev. C. Heaton and T. Armstrong went to the wickets, and from the commencement to the close of the innings runs came merrily, much to the delight of the Ansley spectators. Each batsman, in turn, treated the Atherstone bowling with scant courtesy, and all the players had a “go” at it. The Rev. C. Heaton (15) and Mr. Extras (27) were top scorers. Shortly after five o’clock, the Ansley innings closed for the respectable total of 130. Mr Vaughan received a nasty knock in attempting to field a hot drive from Greenough and could not bat. After the usual interval, Foster and Allcock opened for Atherstone, but when 7 had been scored, Foster was bowled by J. H. Phillips, and one by one the Atherstone men retired in quick succession before the deliveries of this bowler, who had the remarkable average of 6 wickets for 11 runs. Greenough had 2 wickets for 6 runs, and the fielding of Ansley was everything that could be desired. Looking backward to the previous two weeks, it will be seen that the Ansley batsmen have been most consistent in their scoring, as they have knocked up centuries in three consecutive weeks, vis., 102 against Warton (Liggins Cup) for 8 wickets, and 122 against Coventry Union Street (Liggins Cup) for 9 wickets. It was the cry of the Atherstone spectators that they hadn’t brought their best team, but a glance at the names of the players will show that the Watling Street club had a good eleven up. Score:-

Chapel End v Ansley Victoria.

These great local rivals met in the semi-final of the Liggins Cup. The “gate” amounted to £6 6s 6yd., this representing an attendance of something like 600 persons. Winning the toss, Ansley put their opponents in. Chapel End made a fair start, the opening partnership being productive of 15 runs. Four wickets were down for 23, but when the fifth fell the half-century had been left behind. The most successful bowler on the Ansley side was P. Greenough, who had two wickets for nine runs. J. H. Phillips had three for 21, in ten overs, four of which were maidens. Ansley’s start was very poor, T. Armstrong being beaten by the sixth ball of the match. Three wickets were down for ten, and the chapter concluded at 49 (sic). T. J. Randall came off with a wonderful bowling average. He sent down 16 overs, eight of which were maidens, and his five wickets cost 10 runs. The runs scored from his bowling were, with one exception, singles. In six of his overs only one run was scored in each. W. Boulstridge had three wickets for eight runs. I Moore bowled 15 overs, seven of which were maidens, for no wicket. Score: -

Ansley Victoria v. Freasley.

The above clubs met for the first time this season at Ansley, on Saturday, when a draw resulted, greatly in favour of the home team. The Ansley captain won the toss, and decided to take first knock. J. Cocks and T. Armstrong went to the wicket, but only a few runs had been obtained when Armstrong received a blow on the hand, which caused him to retire. This was a piece of misfortune for Ansley, but so well did the others bat that 124 runs was obtained for the loss of 5 wickets, when the innings was declared closed. J. Cocks batted splendidly for his 55, obtained without giving a chance. The Freasley men had two hours in which to get the runs, but they could only manage to secure 81 for 8 wickets. B. Lawrence batted well for 32 (not out). Undoubtedly, “Father Time” robbed the “Vics.” of a well-merited victory. For the home team T. Armstrong took 5 wickets for 25 runs; J. H. Phillips, 2 for 12; and J. Cocks, 1 for 13. To-morrow, Ansley meet Atherstone Town, at Atherstone, when a close tussle should ensue. Score: -

Ansley Victoria v Atherstone Town.

The return match between these teams was played at Atherstone, on Saturday, and time alone prevented the Ansley team from administering another defeat to the Atherstone cricketers. It will be remembered that Ansley beat Atherstone on the first occasion by 130 runs to 36, and the townsmen, it is said, intended wiping this out if they possibly could, by getting together a strong team. Ansley won the toss, and batted first, Armstrong and Cocks facing the bowling of Chetwynd and Wilson. Armstrong batted with great freedom, and soon knocked up 22. Greenough and Tremlett played well, and on the fall of the fourth wicket an excellent partnership was entered into by J. H. Phillips and I. Jones, who carried the total from 58 to 92. The innings closed for 105. Cole and Allcock opened for Atherstone, and as each run was scored the spectators howled in such a manner and became so personal that the batsmen had to appeal to them to keep order. Allcock played very well for 12, and Bacon hit vigorously for 16. Mears played a monotonous game, in trying to avert defeat; but, at the close, the total was 62 for seven wickets, or greatly in favour of Ansley. Details: -

The Cricket Match.

(Part of the first annual Flower Show and Summer Fete of the Ansley Floral and Horticultural Society, held at Ansley Hall)

The afternoon was occupied by a cricket match, in which the contestants were Ansley v. Foleshill St Paul’s District. This made the third occasion on which these clubs had come together in the present season, and, as both previous games had been close affairs, naturally the match on Monday created considerable interest. Ansley were without their captain, Mr. J. H. Phillips, who was away from home on his holidays, but a strong side had been got together, including Mr. Cole (an old player of some repute), Mr Bacon (son of the worthy Rector of Baddesley), J Smith (Nuneaton) and A Haddon (the Chapel End wicket-keeper). Foleshill, too, lacked the services of their captain (R Orton); their clever bowler Mold; and one or two others. A valuable addition to the team was T. E. Shadbolt, of the Coventry and North Warwickshire Club. On the same side were A. Pickard (Springfields) and W. Smith (Great Heath).

Losing the toss, the Foleshill men had first turn in the field. Shadbolt gave the game a sensational opening in dismissing T. Armstrong with the first ball of the match. Cole was sent back by a brilliant catch in the slips by Shadbolt, off the last ball of the second over. The retiring batsman had made eight of the nine runs registered when the second wicket went down. With Bacon and Greenough in partnership matters improved, but the companionship was broken by Shadbolt, who displaced Greenough’s bail with a splendid length ball. J. Smith was easily taken by the other Smith; and Bacon, who had played attractive cricket succumbed to a really fine throw-in by S. Carpenter (left-hand). W. Carpenter – who, in the absence of Orton, donned the gauntlet – brought off two clever catches behind the wicket; and an equally clever performance was the catch effected by G. Carpenter, in the slips, which resulted in the dismissal of Farndon. Sage hit out merrily at every loose ball that came his way, and was most unfortunate in getting run out. C. W. Phillips -–Mr. W. G. Phillips’ youngest son – carried out his bat after making some good strokes. Shadbolt had six wickets for 44 runs. Williams only sent down two overs, from which 14 runs were knocked. A word of praise is due to W. Carpenter, who only allowed one bye (the first extra), which was the sixty-sixth run scored.

Foleshill were lucky in escaping defeat as with only one wicket to fall, they were, at the close, 96 runs behind. Two or three wickets were recklessly thrown away. When Shadbolt left, the score was 11, he having made 10 of that number. Jones was most successful with the ball, and Haddon distinguished himself behind the wickets. Details: -
