Ansley Victoria v Hurley

The Victoria cricket eleven of Ansley continue their victorious march. They drew rings round the Hurley men, last week end; and, from the score, it would seem that however early the Hurley men may arise, they are sure to find that Victoria is a name to be reckoned with.

Ansley scored 63, John Phillips compiling 24 in fine style, and then having the misfortune to get run out. Joseph Farndon made 11, and Thomas Sage 8.

Hurley replied with 13 - unlucky number! - five of which were extras. The bowling of Jas. Phillips and James Jones proved, without doubt, too much for the visitors, for eight of the "Hurley birds" were found in possession of "eggs" - duck eggs - at the close of the game! Ansley won by 50 runs; and these were not all the runs they recorded for four of their men played until they were actually run out!

On the Ansley side were three persons bearing the name of Phillips; and, what is stranger still, all three delight in a Christian name beginning with J - John, James and Joseph.

Coton Albion v Ansley Victoria

Ansley Victoria cricketers visited Coton, on Saturday, and were beaten by the Albion - 49 to 80. Sage, Jones, and Phillips were the chief scorers. Coton lost their first five wickets for 28 runs, but when Lambourne and W. Sheffield became associated, a change came o'er the scene. These men - or rather Lambourne, for Sheffield only made three runs in half-an-hour - carried the score to 57, both being bowled by Jones. Lambourne had contributed 32, and, I am told, he was the best man on the field.

Ansley Victoria v Hurley

Quite early - should it not be "Quiet, Hurley!" for the music of the Hurley men has been silenced - I have to record the second defeat of the Hurley men at the hands of Ansley Victoria. Batting first, the Ansley men scored 86, thanks to some useful work by Joseph Farndon (14 runs), C. Morgan 12, T. Sherwood 12, J. Jones 11, T. Whitcroft 10, and J. Phillips 9. The Hurley men replied with 33.

Joseph Farndon and James Jones bowled very well for the winners, the former having 4 wickets and the latter six.

Sat 6th June 1896

Ansley Victoria v Ansley Village

Ansley v. Ansley! On Saturday, the village of Ansley was divided against itself; for the "Vics" were playing the Village XI. Going in first, the "Vics" made 38, including 13 by John Phillips. The other side responded with 30, the highest item being contributed by that gentleman bearing the title "Mr. Extras." In bowling, Jones and Phillips, on the winning side; and Billingham (6 wickets, cleaned bowled), on the other, were the chief performances.

The Rev. C. Heaton was one of the players.
