Sat 4th May 1895

A very enjoyable match was played in the Ansley Hall Park, between 11 chosen members and 22 ordinary members of the Ansley Victoria Cricket Club. The proceeds, which amounted to over £2, were in aid of one of the workmen at the Ansley Hall Colliery, whose little boy has had the misfortune to lose a leg.

Nuneaton Observer 21-6-1895. I Presume Isaac Randle is the same as Isaac Randall from last week.

Nuneaton Chronicle 21-6-1895 has

The Ansley Victoria C.C. seem to be making a shine in the cricketing world, although they have only commenced this season, and, doubtless, if they only hold out as they have begun, they will, by another season, hold their own with any of their neighbours. The following scores have been the results of the three last Saturday's matches:- Against Hinckley Parish Church 89 to 38, against Chilvers Coton reserve 81 to 34, and against Attleborough Y.M.A. 71 to 26. The last mentioned was played on Saturday, and on the same day the second team were matched against Chapel End reserve where they secured the victory by 43 to 41. I shall be glad to hear how they are getting on every week if the secretary will send me the total scores, highest individual batting on both sides, and any interesting particulars, the same as are given of other matches. This remark, may I say applies to all club secretaries, for I want to serve all alike.

Nuneaton Observer 28-6-1895

Nuneaton Chronicle 28-6-1895 has:-

Keresley v Ansley Hall

A cricket match was played on Saturday between Keresley and Ansley Hall, on the ground of the former. The visitors arrived two hours late, probably because they thought it would be a pity to hurry and get too hot. When they arrived, however, they had to do a bit of fielding, for Keresley started the batting and got up to 33 before the "big crash" came, Wilcox and Malins (the captain) being the chief contributors. With about 35 minutes left in which to play, Ansley went at the batting with a will, and secured the required runs for a win with six wickets in hand. After such play, it is scarcely necessary to tell you that Ansley have not lost a match this year. The fact of not having lost a match, makes them very light hearted, and it strikes me, after the way they arrived at Keresley, that they look upon all their engagements as safety matches. 'Fusee any of them during the week you might tell them what I say.

A. Hollis was the highest scorer for Ansley, with 12, not out, J. Illstone coming next with 9, and C. Morgan making 7. The 6 made by Wilcox was the top score for Keresley. Jones clean bowled seven of the Keresley men, and the other three wickets were credited to H. Farndon.

Sporting Notes

To build without bricks and mortar is generally looked upon as well-nigh an impossible task, and a similar difficulty is presented to the writer in penning sporting notes with scarcely anything to write about. Rain fell to such an extent on Saturday morning as to shatter all hopes of cricket in this locality, and although the weather cleared up somewhat in the afternoon the wicket was found to be in quite a sodden condition. Despite this, one match was played on the Albions' ground, in order that the never-failing ansley Victoria team should not be disappointed in their visit, but alas! for the Albions, it ended in their downfall. Going to the wickets first, the home team only managed to compile 37, owing to the excellent bowling of J. Phillips, and of that number, A. Lingard was responsible for 10.

The Ansley team had passed their opponents' score ere the third wicket fell, and with six men out, the closure was put on, the total being 51. A. Hollis was the highest contributor with 13, but the score was helped very materially by an accumulation of 20 extras, accounted for no doubt by the "greasy" nature of the ball.

Sat 21st September 1895

The season of the Ansley Victoria Cricket club was brought to a successful conclusion on Saturday with a match and a supper. The former was between members of the club; and at the other proceedings Mr W. G. Phillips (Ansley Hall) presided.

The good things were much enjoyed, as also were the remarks of the chairman. That gentleman passed a favourable comment on a statement of the affairs of the club during the past season; and, amidst applause, said that he hoped that after the ground had been laid out, which he had promised them he would do, still greater success would attend their efforts in the future.

The Vicar of Ansley (the Rev. Charles Heaton), who plays with the club, spoke of the great pleasure it afforded him to be among them, and he was glad the club had been carried on in so creditable and successful a manner.

Votes of thanks were accorded to the chairman, the captain (Mr. Sage) the sub-capt. (Mr. Jas. Phillips), the secretary (Mr. H. Burbage), the committee, and Mr. Jesse Farndon, for so kindly granting the club free use of his ground.

A most enjoyable evening it was. The vocal and instrumental selections were both well rendered and received and the National Anthem was lustily sung at the close.
