Ansley Cricket History
When, early in 1999, it was
suggested that Ansley Sports Cricket Club was about 100 years old, and there
seemed to be a good excuse for a party, I began to look in the local newspapers
for evidence.
It soon became apparent that
in 1899 there was a thriving club based at Ansley Hall where we play. This club
seems to be variously referred to by the newspapers as Ansley
There was also a club known

In addition the Lord Nelson
public house played occasional matches.

Miscellaneous Matches
I have tried to reproduce
the reports verbatim from the newspapers of the time. Score sheets have been
standardised as a variety of formats were used.
Text in italics is used for
acknowledging the source of the items and for my comments about those items.
In addition I believe I have
found Ansley’s one and only first class cricketer, Joseph
Herbert Phillips,
who played for Warwickshire six times in the early part of the 20th century.
